VISITS AND INSPECTIONS
The Hon’ble Minister incharge Community & Rural Development
Department, Mrs. M. War, visited the Integrated Wasteland Development
Project. Project site at Tum Tum on February 27,2002. She was shown
various works implemented under the scheme including the nurseries.

On 18th June, 2002 Shri B. Rath, Assistant Commissioner,
Ministry of Agriculture, National Resource Management Division, Govt. of
India visited the Umlew Micro-Watershed (WDPSCA) at Mawsiatkhnam and
inspected some of the works under Entry Point Activity constructed by the
Watershed Committee of the area. On the 21st June 2002, Mr. Rath
also visited the Umpling-Umrynjah Micro-Watershed and inspected works
under Entry Point Activity at Madan-Mawkhar and other works constructed by
the Watershed Committee members, which included dug out ponds, silt
retention-cum-irrigation dam, erosion and streambank protection and agro-horticulture.

SEEDLINGS
DISTRIBUTION
To emphasize the importance of growing fruit trees and cash
crops for the dual purpose of soil conservation and economic profits, the
Department of Soil Conservation under various schemes, distributed fruit
trees and cash crop seedlings to the farmers in many areas of the State.
Some Divisions of the Department had distributed seedlings to farmers
during farmers’ training programmes while others distributed as show
below-
1. Baghmara Soil Conservation (CC) Division had distributed more than
25,000 nos. of Arecanut Polybag Seedlings under the General Scheme to
farmers on separate occasions viz., 15th May, 2002 at Dilsinggre; 16th
May, 2002 at Sittinggre and 17th May, 2002 at Rongsepgre.
2. Tura Soil Conservation (CC) Division had organized an Arecanut
seedling distribution programme on 14th June, 2002 at Ampati Cash Crop
Beat for Border Areas Development Scheme under Central Sector Scheme.
3. Simsanggre Soil Conservation Division, Williamnagar had organized an
Arecanut seedling distribution programme where 1,12,000 nos. of arecanut
seedlings had been distributed to the beneficiaries of watersheds taken up
under NABARD, WDPSCA and IWDP Schemes.

TREE PLANTATION DRIVE
The village Durbar Umrynjah in collaboration with the Soil Conservation
(T) Division, Shillong had organized a tree planting programme on the 11th
June, 2002 at the village Durbar Compound on both sides of the village
road, school compound and around the football ground.
AWARENESS PROGRAMME
Awareness Programme at Mawjatap – The United Rural Development
Society had organized a General Awareness Programme at Mawjatap village on
the 12th April, 2002 in order to highlight the farmers of the area the
various developmental activities of the Departments of the State. Shri G.
Kharmujai, Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Shillong (CC) Division
attended the function as a Resource person and highlighted about the
various activities taken up by the Soil and Water Conservation Department
in different areas of the State. He also stressed on the ill-effects of
jhum cultivation and other activities that lead to natural degradation.
