WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATIONS 5th June,2004. The office of the Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Shillong Soil Conservation (T) Division, celebrated the World Environment Day at Mawsmai Eco-Park, Cherrapunjee. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Shri K.L.Tariang, Director of Soil & Water Conservation and Guest of Honour was Shri B.S.Sohliya, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) Sohra. During the celebration, 3000 fingerlings were released in the two water conservation ponds constructed within the park and about 214 numbers of sapling were planted. The Welcome address was delivered by Shri A.Syiem, Joint Director of Soil Conservation (Headquarters). Speakers include Shri K.Niangmih, Lecturer, Sohra Government, Shri R.Hynniewta, Sordar Mawsmai, Shri K.S.Kshiar, Secretary, Kutmadan, Shri A.D.Rynga, President of Kyntiew Shaphrang Social Organisation, Laitiam, Sohra Syiemship. The Vote of Thanks was offered by Shri Newland Dkhar, Range Officer, Shillong (T) Division.
(DSCO - Simsanggre). In East Garo Hills, the World Environment Day Celebration Cum-Tree Planting Programme was organised on 5th June, 2004, at Rongrenggre Model Secondary School. Shri E.P.Kharbhih, I.A.S., Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills, speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest stressed on the need for immediate revitalization of the area which is rich in flora and fauna and other forest resources and also to arrest the impending danger of ecological and environmental disasters by planting more trees in the surroundings. Shri Savio-Chisim, incharge District Horticulture Officer, on his key note address highlighted many issues related to the World Environment Day. Others who spoke on the occasion were Shri Choronising. A.Sangma, Ex-MDC & Executive Member, Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and Smti V.M.Sangma, Headmaster of Rongrenggre Model Secondary School. The student enthralled the audience by presenting a befitting song and a short skit. About 1500 Nos. of arecanut seedlings together with forest saplings were planted in and around the school premises. [DSCO - N (T)] The office of the Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Nongstoin Soil Conservation jointly with the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry, Nongstoin, celebrated the World Environemnt Day at Govt. L.P. School, Nongpyndeng under West Khasi Hills District. The Chief Guest at the function Shri Donkupar Dkhar, I.A.S., Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills District, in his address to the participants comprising of students, N.G.Os. and officials of other departments in the District, pointed out the prevailing environmental problems like deforestation, charcoal burning and others and the immediate need to put a stop to such activities. Other Speakers at the meeting were Shri S.Nongsiej, DFO, Shri P.Marbaniang, DPRO, Shri L.M.Syiemlieh, A.A.M.O. (Agriculture) Shri W.Syiemlieh of Haiku Economic and Rural Development Society (HERDS) and Shri T.Lyngkhoi. The meeting was presided over by Shri D.Langstieh, Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, the welcome speech was given by Shri P.Rapthap, ASCO, and the Vote of Thanks was delivered by Shri S.S.Kharsyntiew, ASCO. A total numbers of 500 saplings were planted and each student were given two fruit trees seedlings to plant in their homestead. Fingerlings were also released in two multipurpose water-harvesting ponds at Nongpyndeng and Lad Nongsba localities in Nongstoin. A debate competition was also organized on the topic "Charcoal burning a hazard to the environment", with the main objective of creating awareness amongst the students and general public. A total of 10 students from nine schools took part in the debate. The Winners of the Debate competition were Shri Hamilton N.Dkhar of St. Xavier’s Secondary School, who bagged the 1st prize and the 2nd prize was bagged by Shri Bisharlang Sohshang of Presbyterian Secondary School Siejlieh. The 3rd prize was bagged by Elpidius Lyngdoh Marshillong of St. Peter’s Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin. Mementoes and Certificates were also given to all the other participants.
