INTERFACE MEETING OF SELF-HELP GROUPS

The first Interface meeting of Self Help Groups (SHGs) formed and nurtured by the Soil & Water Conservation Department was held on 15th June, 2005 at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shillong.

KEEPING PACE WITH NEW CALLS

The dynamics of conservation and developmental efforts with which the Soil and Water Conservation Department of the State is involved call for adaptations. While keeping in mind the proven concepts and practices of conservation which is basically to preserve the fertility and water holding capacity of the soil in situ, we cannot close our eyes to the changing needs of the time.

DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

The Jaintia Hills Soil & Water Conservation (T) Division, Jowai celebrates the World Environment Day on 6th June 2005 at Church of God Secondary School, Ummulong. Three numbers of schools participated in the celebration along with villagers, officers and staff of the Department.

MEETINGS AND AWARENESS PROGRAMMES

Meeting on Implementation of Watershed Programme under IWDP (2003-2004) was held on 12.5.2005 in the seminar room of Divisional Officer Shillong (T) in which PRA exercises and Watershed Development Plans are discussed.

PASSING OUT CEREMONY

The Passing Out Ceremony of the Five Day Orientation Training Course for enhancing productivity of degraded lands in the catchments of river valley projects and flood prone rivers was held on 22nd April, 2005. Shri D.S. Kharsyntiew, Joint Director of Soil & Water Conservation, Research and Training was the Chairman at the Ceremony.

STUDY TOURS AND EXPOSURE TRIPS

The 32nd Batch Field Assistant Trainees of Conservation Training Institute, Byrnihat went on a study tour to East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts from 9th to 21st May, 2005. The purpose of the tour is to enable the trainees to acquaint themselves with the various works of soil and water conservation, forestry, agriculture, watershed management, central sector scheme, NABARD scheme, horticulture, study of rocks and minerals, science and technology undertaken by the Department in the above districts.

TIPS FOR CULTIVATION OF JATROPHA CURCAS

Jatropha Curcas belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae. It is a small tree or shrub which grows between 3 to 5 metres in height. Fruits are produced in winter when the shrub is leafless. Each inflorescence yield a bunch of approximately 10 or Details ovoid fruits. The seeds become mature when the capsule changes from green to yellow, after two to four months from fertilization. The blackish, thin shelled seeds are oblong and resemble castor seeds.
