Functions and Celebrations

The Barani Chetna Kendra of Upper Umbyrngaid WDPSCA Watershed at Umden, Nongtluh which had been constructed under the provision from the scheme was inaugurated by Shri D.D. Lapang, Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya on 17th January, 2002. Also present on the occasion were the Joint Director of Soil Conservation, Conservation Training Institute, Byrnihat, Shri D.S. Kharsyntiew who is also the Co-ordinator of the Scheme. The Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Ri-Bhoi Division, Shri D.L. Warbah, the District Horticulture Officer, Shri E. Shanpru, Shri D. Matong, the Chairman of the function who is also the Chairman of the Upper Umbyrngaid Watershed Committee and the Watershed Committee Members of the five villages falling under the watershed area were also present on the occasion. The school children presented the welcome song.

In his speech, the Chief Guest stressed on the proper implementation of the scheme and urged the public of the watershed to work hard and co-operate with the implementing agencies so as to make the scheme a success. To mark the occasion, the implementing agency and the Watershed Committee presented a memento to the Hon’ble Chief Guest.

As part of the Meghalaya Day Celebration,West Khasi Hills held a function at Trysem Hall in the Office of Deputy Commissioner Nongstoin. Here the Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Nongstoin, Shri D. Langstieh delivered a speech on conservation of soil and water and the need to conserve the environment.

As part of the Republic Day celebration at Jaintia Hills District, the Divisional offices of the Soil And Water Conservation Department displayed a Tableau depicting all the activities of the Department at Jrisalein playground, Jowai. The Tableau bagged second prize in the show.

On 21st May, 2002, Shri K.L. Tariang, Director of Soil Conservation, Meghalaya, Shillong visited the Umyiap river valley project where he unveiled the monument of gratitude erected by the 11 Sordars/villages benefitting from the Project.

Earlier during the day, he had released fingerlings in the newly constructed multi-purpose farm pond at Mawiawet.

Later on at the same function, to mark the occasion, he was introduced to the players of the final football match between Umsohpieng and Nongspung at the same venue, that is, Madanriewblei. At the end of the match, the Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Nongstoin Division, Shri D. Langstieh and Shri L. Shabong, Assistant Soil Conservation Officer gave away the prizes to the teams.
