Department Celebrates World Environment Day

The Jaintia Hills Soil & Water Conservation (T) Division, Jowai celebrates the World Environment Day on 6th June 2005 at Church of God Secondary School, Ummulong. Three numbers of schools participated in the celebration along with villagers, officers and staff of the Department.

Shri D.K.Khonglah Assistant Soil and Water Conservation Officer chaired the meeting and explained its purpose. Shri N.M. Thma gave the welcome address.

Shri A.Pasi, Assistant Teacher of Little Flower Secondary School, Smti. M.L.Lamare, Shri. S.D.Blah and many others rendered short speeches on the occasion.

The Chief Guest on this occasion was Shri. J.M.Kyndiah M.D.C. In his speech the chief guest stressed on the importance of peoples’ participation in preserving the environment. He also made an appeal to the student community who are the future of the country to spread the message on the importance of conserving mother earth.

The vote of thanks was offered by Shri L.Pohktai, Range Officer. After the meeting, a tree planting programme was also organized where about 200 nos. of seedlings were planted in and around the campus of the Church of God Secondary School Ummulong.

The Office of the Divisional Soil and Water Conservation Officer, Nongstoin in collaboration with the Department of Forest (Social Forestry Division), Nongstoin and Haiku Economic Resource Development Society (HERDS) celebrate the “World Environment Day” on 6th June 2005 at JNV Campus, Nongpyndeng. The schools students from Swin School along with the teachers participated in the celebration. An introductory speech on the theme “Green Cities: Plan for the Planet”, was delivered by Shri S.A.Nongsiej Divisional Forest Officer. The Chief Guest on the function was Shri. R.D.West Member Secretary, Meghalaya State Council of Science, Technology and Environment. Other Speakers at the meeting were the Guest of Honour, Shri E.Kharmalki, Additional Deputy Commissioner, representatives from the teachers, the Acting Vice Principal of JNV, Shri T.Byrsat, Myntri of Nongpyndeng-Mawkhlam and Fr.James Mani, Parish Priest of St Peter’s Pyndengrei. The meeting was presided by Shri D.Langstieh Divisional Soil and Water Conservation Officer Nongstoin. The welcome speech was offered by Shri. J.R. Diengdoh, and the vote of thanks by Smti. B.H.Syiem, Assistant Soil and Water Conservation Officer.

The meeting was followed by planting of tree saplings in the school premises by the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Officers, Teachers and Students. The aim of the programme is to imprint upon the young minds of the students of the need for eco-restoration. Fingerlings were also released in the Multipurpose Water Harvesting Ponds at Mawkhlam-Nongpyndeng.

A slogan and Extempore Speech Competition on topics related to the theme were organized for the students with an objective to create awareness among the students about the environment hazards and conservation and protection of environment.

The winners of the Extempore Speech Competition are:-

  1. 1st Prize – Shri Smiling Star M.L.Nonglait of Sib Singh L. Memorial Govt. Higher Secondary School.

  2. 2nd Prize – Shri Badonbok Paliar of Church of God Secondary School.

  3. 3rd Prize – Shri Sohitbor Diengngan of Christian Secondary School.

The winners for the Slogan Competition are:-

  1. 1st Prize – Sib Singh Memo. Government Higher Secondary School.

  2. 2nd Prize – Presbyterian Secondary School, Siejlieh.

  3. 3rd Prize – Anderson English Secondary School, Upper New Nongstoin.

Officers, staff, trainees and students of the Conservation Training Institute’s School attended the function organized on the occasion of World Environment Day on 7th June, 2005. Shri G. Chakraborty, Instructor delivered a speech in which he stressed on the importance of environment. After the function, 100 nos. of saplings were planted in the Arboratum of the Institute.
